This is an admirable attempt at trying to make money and monetary policy interesting by writing it in the style of an investigative historian trying to solve a puzzle. I found it easy to read, and quite engaging. Sometimes I thought the author made some conceptual leaps without good explanation (possibly due to the style of the book) but this book is certainly thought-provoking.

His view, that money is a social technology, an accounting concept and transferable debt, is not entirely new. Many non-mainstream economists (such as the MMT theorists) have made similar arguments based on different historical evidence, perhaps not in such readable style. I think the evidence in this book, and elsewhere, is quite convincing - money is much much more than simply a way to pay for things, and conventional views certainly miss a lot of the significance of money. If you have never come across these views, this book will make you look at the world differently.

The thesis that many of our problems emerge from a lack of understanding of money is one with which I agree. There is certainly a problem when a profession (economists like myself) can influence policies driven by an understanding of money that is not derived from the social reality or the actual practice of banking (I have met countless economists who hold naive textbook views about the financial system which they would change if they actually worked in a bank). Whether this new understanding will save capitalism as the author claims, probably goes a bit too far. One of the final policy conclusions (narrow banking, a system where banks only take deposits backed 100% by the national currency) is controversial, and not easy to reconcile with his thesis.

He also had a worldwide radio program, founded Christian Financial Concepts, and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Crown Financial Ministries. Several homeschoolers have recommended his books, so when I saw Money Matters for Teens with two workbooks also by Burkett with Todd Temple, one for ages 11-14 and the other for ages 15-18, at a homeschool conference a few years ago, I picked them up for use with our boys. Many states are now requiring a class in personal finance to graduate from public school. But aside from that, it's just a good idea for teens to be introduced to these matters. Our older son Mark took a personal finance course in the same homeschool coop with which he did biology and chemistry, so I never used the books with him, but Jeremy used them this year.

In a time where money seems to be difficult to obtain yet easy to lose, I was excited to get my hands on this book regarding Amish money secrets. I do not know much about the author, Lorilee Craker, other than that she is a Mennonite who traveled into Lancaster County, PA to interview different Amish voices in regards to their money secrets--specifically, living simple and saving without depriving.

The book is 217 pages long, but it is a very fast read. I received the book this afternoon and started reading at about 5:00 PM. It is now 9:55 PM and I am writing the review. The book is just an enjoyable read because it is relevant to the economic times of our society. We are all wanting to know how to live simple, not be deprived, yet able to save money to enjoy retirement or the occasional luxuries of life.

Most of the concepts weren't new to me, and I was prepared for that. Just couldn't handle the author's tone. Had to force myself to keep focusing on the essence of what she was saying and manufacture compassion. She would have been better off just giving advice as a successful woman. Instead, she keeps referring back to "her story" which she apparently thinks will qualify her to advise people. But her story is basically that she was born into wealth, never wanted for anything, let her mom support her until that didn't feel good anymore, and carried some credit card debt for a while - all while she was still making six figures. (gasp!) It just didn't resonate with me. I left the book in my laundry room downstairs.

We bought this book to help teach our 7 year old how to manage her money. Where the book met expectations were the areas of values and healthy ways to think of money : Money isn't ours. We're stewards of God's money and therefore, we should spend it wisely, etc.
Where it didn't meet expectations, is that it didn't really provide a sample plan for how to allocate resources. While certainly, the greatest issue in dealing with money is mental -- getting your head around the idea that you have to live within your means and that you don't have to have everything NOW or just because someone else has it -- there is also a need for concrete examples....Given the above problem, I would still recommend this book as something to work through with a child because those psychological issues about spending are significant enough that they can make the difference between a someday adult with healthy attitudes about money and someone who is in debt, unhappy yet still wanting MORE! In that respect, this book is aces.
